After reading so many of Dennis Lehane’s books, I may as well admit it. I am a huge fan. He never disappoints rather he shocks and draw you into considering ideas and beliefs than you may not have spent a lot of time mulling over. In this book, he handles questions of race superbly without being pedantic. His treatment of the subject is not likely to change any minds but hopefully, he will get you to broaden your perspective. A Drink Before the War is gut-wrenching thriller full of action and really nasty bad guys. The payoff at the end is sooo satisfying. The prose, in places, is downright eloquent and snarky and clever. If you like a good thriller and don’t mind thinking, this is the book for you.
